Each year a few new species of grass, sedge or flower join the gathering of stunning plants in each of our meadows. Seeds have either blown in or been disturbed and released from the seed bank. One day this week I gasped as I noticed a lone ox eye daisy poking up and waving in the wind.

I carefully picked my way over the forget-me-nots, clovers, plantain and all the other beauties already flowering. When I got there I gasped again as I noticed a few ragged robins. I fell in love with this incredibly dainty and yet very resilient flower when we moved to County Clare about 17 years ago. I had never seen one before.

Then a third gasp followed as I noticed a single marsh thistle about to flower. Wow. I’m just amazed by what will flourish here given a little space.

I will try to do a count this year to see what we are up to in terms of individual species. I would give a rough estimate of at least 35 species of plants in the meadow but there could be more. I’ll let you know.
The next article will feature a video of the stunning meadow at the front of our property. Stand by.
I eagerly await the video. This is exciting!
